Climate CHANGE Adaptation

Transforming Challenges into Opportunities

Developing inclusive strategies for climate, reforestation, and rural communities in Somalia. The world’s greatest challenges offer pathways to an improved future. By implementing adaptable reforestation approaches and programs, we can increase our joint resilience to climate change while simultaneously enhancing community livelihoods, economic well-being, and security.

Gender Equality

Climate change significantly intensifies the difficulties encountered by women, who are typically the main providers for families’ necessities. In rural parts of Somalia, women usually bear the responsibility of supplying their households with essentials like food, water, and energy. Their reliance on natural resources is greater than that of men, stemming from an unequal distribution of assets and income opportunities.

Adaptation & Climate Justice

In Africa, vulnerable communities, with Somalia as a prime example, are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis. Somalia, despite being among the least contributors to the causes of global climate change, is already facing its severe effects. Advocating for climate adaptation in the most impacted communities and regions is a key aspect of climate justice.

Recognizing and addressing the entrenched inequalities in our society is crucial for improving our ability to respond and adapt to the intensifying challenges brought about by climate change. This is particularly important for Somalia, where the loss and damage from climate change are becoming increasingly prominent, both in the upcoming decades and throughout this century.

Building Climate Resilience in Somalia: Focus on Adaptive Agriculture

Our initiatives in Somalia are dedicated to addressing the profound impacts of climate change, notably the extreme droughts and floods that disproportionately affect vulnerable communities. The focus is on enhancing environmental and economic resilience through adaptive agriculture and agroforestry practices. These initiatives include environmental mediation to alleviate conflicts over natural resources, reforestation efforts to reverse deforestation, and innovative water management strategies like sand dams and water harvesting. Additionally, we emphasize capacity building among local communities and government officials, with a special focus on empowering women in peacebuilding and decision-making roles. These concerted efforts aim to bolster Somalia’s resilience and response to the challenges of climate change.
