Forest Conservation

Regreening the Desert

In alignment with the UN Decade of Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, our work in Somalia is centered on the conservation and restoration of forests, a critical element for the country’s environmental stability. Our efforts involve planting resilient native species, tackling challenges like illegal logging and charcoal trade, and promoting sustainable land practices.

We prioritize community engagement, understanding that the success of forest conservation is deeply intertwined with local involvement and education. Collaborating closely with international agencies and local NGOs, we aim to create a sustainable model for environmental stewardship in Somalia. This integrated approach is crucial for restoring ecological balance and ensuring the long-term health and resilience of Somalia’s forest ecosystems.

 Reviving Somalia’s Ecosystems

Somalia’s woodlands, a crucial part of the country’s natural heritage, play a vital role in the local ecosystem. This region, nestled in the larger Horn of Africa, is a reservoir of biodiversity, hosting a wide range of flora including aromatic trees like Boswellia and Commiphora, known for resins like frankincense and myrrh, along with many other endemic plant species.

The woodlands are threatened by various factors, including frequent droughts, unsustainable land use, and exploitation for resources like charcoal. Climate change and environmental degradation have further escalated land degradation, ranking among the region’s most pressing issues.

Our initiatives aim to be a part of the solution. We’re committed to restoring Somalia’s diverse ecosystems, advocating for sustainable land management, and supporting reforestation.

Preserving Somalia’s Woodlands

Somalia’s woodlands are under pressure due to urban expansion, poverty, and the dependence on wood for fuel. This situation leads to significant environmental strain, with the natural habitats facing the risk of over-exploitation and degradation.

Our initiative focuses on confronting these challenges by advocating for sustainable practices and solutions aimed at preserving Somalia’s vital natural habitats, ensuring their resilience and health in the face of urbanization and economic hardships.

Together, let’s ensure a thriving future for Somalia’s diverse forests.
